Selecting a photographer is one of the most significant wedding decisions. These images will serve as timeless keepsakes, capturing the essence of your day with elegance. It is the beginning of your forever and deserves to be preserved in the most exquisite way.

With so much at stake, finding the perfect professionals to frame these cherished moments can feel overwhelming. At The Lanaux Mansion, we’re here to guide you through every detail, ensuring that your choice reflects both your vision and the refined sophistication your wedding deserves.

Defining Your Photography Style

Beyond simply documenting your day, a skilled photographer will capture the emotions, details, and grandeur of your celebration with an artistry that reflects your unique love story. Just as with every aspect of your wedding, your selection should align seamlessly with your personal aesthetic, ensuring that your vision is beautifully and authentically preserved.

Before beginning your search, take time to explore different photography styles to determine which best complements your wedding’s overall ambiance. Popular styles include:

  • Classic & Traditional – Timeless, posed portraits with an elegant and refined composition
  • Documentary & Candid – Unscripted moments that tell a natural, organic story of the day
  • Dark & Moody – Rich contrasts and dramatic lighting for an editorial feel
  • Warm & Romantic – Soft, golden tones that evoke a sense of intimacy and nostalgia
  • Aerial & Cinematic – Drone and wide-angle shots that provide breathtaking, panoramic views

Understanding your preferred aesthetic will help you curate a list of photographers whose work aligns with your vision.

Selecting the Right Photographer

Once you’ve identified your style, begin researching photographers in the area. Review their portfolios carefully, paying attention to full wedding galleries rather than just highlight reels. This will give you a true look at how they capture every part of the day, from intricate details to grand celebrations.

Consider photographers who are already familiar with your wedding location! Their expertise in lighting, angles, and composition within that setting can elevate your final images. We are happy to provide recommendations, connecting you with professionals who have beautifully captured weddings at our venue and are a delight to work with.

Keep in mind that availability can fill up quickly. Once you have conducted your research, create a list of your top choices before reaching out for pricing and availability. If your preferred photographer is unavailable on your date, having a few secondary options ensures a seamless selection process without unnecessary delays.

The Booking Process: What to Ask

Before securing your photographer, it is essential to discuss key details to ensure expectations are met. When inquiring, consider asking:

  • What is included in your photography package? (Albums, additional edits, engagement sessions, etc.)
  • Will I receive full print and digital rights to my photos?
  • What is your typical turnaround time for receiving the final images? (Several weeks to a few months is standard for high-end wedding photography.)
  • How would you describe your approach — posed, candid, or a blend of both?
  • Do you offer engagement sessions or bridal portraits?

Beyond technical expertise, your photographer should be someone with whom you feel at ease. They will be by your side throughout the most significant moments of your day, capturing intimate emotions and memories.

The Final Touch: A Trial Engagement Session

One of the best ways to ensure you’re comfortable with your photographer is by booking an engagement session. This allows you to experience their approach, understand how they direct poses, and ensure their style aligns with your expectations. Additionally, engagement sessions serve as a wonderful opportunity to create stunning imagery to use for invitations, wedding websites, and keepsakes.

All in all, selecting a wedding photographer is more than just hiring a professional — it is an investment that will preserve your most cherished moments for generations to come, just like selecting your venue. The Lanaux Mansion offers an exquisite backdrop for every moment of your wedding journey, from romantic ceremonies to elegant receptions and everything in between. Your wedding in New Orleans is more than just a celebration of your love – it’s an experience infused with culture, history, and deep-rooted traditions. Whether you’re local or planning a destination wedding, incorporating classic New Orleans customs is a unique and meaningful way to add a touch of the city’s charm to your special day. From second lines to cake pulls, here’s how to embrace the city’s most beloved wedding traditions.

Sweet Keepsakes

Cake pulls are a charming tradition dating back to Victorian-era New Orleans. Small silver charms are placed inside the wedding cake (usually in the base layer), each tied to a ribbon or attached to a dainty bracelet. Just before the wedding cake is cut, the bride’s closest friends or bridesmaids take turns pulling a ribbon to reveal their charm, each of which has a special meaning — such as a heart for love, a four-leaf clover for luck, a fleur-de-lis for prosperity, or the coveted ring signifying the next person to get married! Some couples choose to create their own charms and have local jewelers craft custom cake pulls. These jewelers often provide keepsake cards so each recipient knows the meaning of their charm as well.

This tradition is especially popular at Southern and Creole weddings, adding an interactive and fun moment to the cake-cutting ceremony and providing the bride’s closest friends and bridesmaids with a cherished piece they can wear to remember the joy of your wedding.

The Money Dance

The money dance is a long-standing tradition in many cultures and particularly in Cajun and Creole weddings. For one song length or a few, guests “pay” to dance with the bride or groom by pinning money onto their outfits or placing bills in a decorated pouch. This symbolizes offering good fortune and financial blessings to the newlyweds as they begin their new life together.

In true New Orleans fashion, many couples spice up the tradition with a jazz band performance or by having their bridal party mingle among the guests to encourage them to join in.

Dance Through the Streets

Perhaps one of the most iconic New Orleans wedding traditions is the second line parade! Originating from the city’s jazz funeral processions, the second line is a joyous, high-energy celebration where the newlyweds lead their guests in a fun and festive march through the streets, often with a local brass-band leading the way.

The newlyweds often provide customized handkerchiefs for their guests to wave as the parade dances down the street. These are great keepsakes that remind your guests not only of your wedding but of a memorable New Orleans experience. And for the newlyweds themselves, customized umbrellas – white for the bride and black for the groom – are a festive touch!

Whether you start the parade after your ceremony or use it as a grand exit from your reception, a second line adds an authentic and unforgettable touch to your wedding day.

A Storybook Send-Off

A time-honored wedding send-off in New Orleans is making your grand exit in a mule-drawn carriage, traversing the historic streets of the French Quarter at the end of your wedding day. Unlike traditional horse-drawn carriages, New Orleans uses mules, as they are better suited for the city’s warm climate and long workdays. This romantic tradition is reminiscent of New Orleans’ old-world charm, making it the perfect way to end the evening in true Southern elegance!

To make the tradition truly unique to your wedding day, have your carriage decorated with flowers to match your bridal bouquet, add a champagne toast on your ride, or time your carriage experience for the evening when the gas lamps come on and create a timeless backdrop against historic facades.

Wedding Photos You’ll Remember For a Lifetime

No New Orleans wedding is complete without stunning photos taken in the French Quarter. With its cobblestone streets, wrought-iron balconies, and historic landmarks, the Quarter provides endless backdrops for breathtaking wedding portraits. Popular locations include the St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square, Royal Street, Bourbon Street (early in the morning hours), and the Garden District.

Pro-Tip: Make your grand exit in a mule-drawn carriage, and have your driver take you to your photography location for a romantic wind-down to your evening that results in beautiful, candid photos of the day you’ll remember for a lifetime. You can even bring your second line umbrellas for a special touch, too!

A New Orleans wedding is unlike any other—blending romance, history, and lively traditions into a one-of-a-kind celebration. Whether you’re dancing through the streets in a second line, slicing into a cake with hidden charms, or taking in the beauty of the French Quarter from a carriage, embracing these timeless customs will make your wedding day even more special.

No matter how you incorporate these traditions, one thing is certain: in New Orleans, love is always worth celebrating in grand style. At the Lanaux Mansion, we’re proud to help our guests embrace the city’s historic charm and elegance as they celebrate that love.

With beautifully preserved architecture, lush courtyards, and luxurious accommodations, it’s the perfect place to host your wedding party or out-of-town guests and ensure that every part of your celebration feels effortlessly immersed in the spirit of New Orleans.

Step into New Orleans’ Festive History

One of the lesser known highlights of the holiday season in New Orleans is the chance to explore some of the city’s most historic homes decked out in their holiday finest.

Wreaths, lights, and garlands adorn the historic facades in the French Quarter and Garden District, while interiors are transformed with Christmas trees, holiday tablescapes, and festive floral arrangements. Docents often share stories of the homes’ history and unique architecture, providing a peek into New Orleans’ storied past. Local musicians also participate each year, providing a festive atmosphere at the homes as you take in the sights.

These holiday tours are organized by Preservation Resource Center and Patio Planters of the Vieux Carré. This year’s Patio Planters of the Vieux Carré self-guided tours will take place on December 22, 2024. When online ticket sales open, they can be purchased on the Patio Planters website or in-person day-of at The Cabildo at 701 Chartres in the French Quarter.

This year’s Preservation Resource Center tours will take place December 14-15, 2024, and tickets are on sale now. Proceeds from tour ticket sales are used to “protect the historic architecture, neighborhoods, and cultural identity of New Orleans.”

If your visit to the Big Easy coincides with the annual Preservation Resource Center Patron Party on December 7, consider mingling with the locals at a true New Orleans soirée! Tickets for the Patron Party may be purchased here.

Sip on Festive Spirits

Once you’ve experienced the Big Easy’s holiday home tours, kick back and relax with a festive spirit or two! No New Orleans holiday experience is complete without indulging in some of the city’s iconic seasonal cocktails. Known for its love of good food and drink, the city has a long history of spirits that perfectly complement the cozy, joyful spirit of the season. Add a little warmth and sweetness to your holiday celebrations with these three must-try beverages: The Grasshopper, Creole Eggnog, and Café Brûlot.

The Grasshopper is a classic New Orleans cocktail born at Tujague’s, one of the city’s oldest bars, in the 1910s. The Grasshopper is a rich, creamy blend of green crème de menthe, white crème de cacao, and heavy cream. It’s sweet, minty, and festive with a hint of chocolate. Bright green in color, it’s both delicious and visually fitting for the season. Whether enjoyed as a holiday dessert drink or as a treat after a night of touring the town, the Grasshopper is a holiday classic that should not be missed.

Eggnog is a holiday staple across the country, but in New Orleans, it takes on a Southern twist. Creole Eggnog is typically made with a good dose of bourbon or dark rum, giving it a rich, warming quality that’s perfect for chilly evenings. Some variations add brandy or even a little bit of Southern Comfort. Look for it at classic New Orleans bars, where bartenders serve up eggnog that’s made in-house and often topped with a sprinkle of nutmeg or cinnamon. It’s creamy, indulgent, and a true taste of Southern hospitality during the holidays.

Last, but certainly not least, try the famous Café Brûlot, a New Orleans holiday tradition that dates back to the 19th century and is as much a performance as it is a drink. Made with strong coffee, brandy, cloves, and orange peel, this drink is prepared tableside and is often set ablaze to caramelize the flavors and add a little flair. Café Brûlot is typically served at the end of a holiday meal at classic New Orleans restaurants like Antoine’s or Galatoire’s, where it’s poured ceremoniously and shared among friends and family. With its warm spices and bold flavor, Café Brûlot is a delightful way to experience New Orleans’ festive spirit.

And when your explorations are finished and you’re ready to kick back and relax in modern comforts, the Lanaux Mansion’s suites are ready for you! Festively decorated for the season and perfect for traveling couples, families, and friends, we’ll ensure a historic, holiday ambiance unlike any other. Families can enjoy a ride aboard the Steamboat Natchez on a holiday cruise, visit the Audubon Zoo, or carol in Jackson Square among the locals. Join the revelry at Caroling in Jackson Square on December 22, where locals and visitors gather by candlelight to sing classic carols beneath the iconic St. Louis Cathedral. New Orleans adds its own flavor to traditional holiday celebrations, and that includes its take on Santa Claus – Papa Noël. You can spot him at various events around the city, often donning a Cajun-style red suit. These festive cruises offer live music, delicious food, and stunning views of the city skyline.

Sailing with Santa takes place on Saturday, November 30 this year and offers an optional lunch buffet, live entertainment, and a unique experience atop the mighty Mississippi. Or climb aboard for their Christmas Eve Cruise with live jazz from the Dukes of Dixieland accompanied by a traditional creole dinner on Tuesday, December 24.

Festive Holiday Feasts

Food is at the heart of any New Orleans celebration, and the holiday season is no exception. One of the city’s unique holiday traditions is Réveillon Dinners, which dates to the 19th century when Creole families would enjoy elaborate meals after midnight mass. Today, many of the city’s finest restaurants offer modern takes on these traditional dinners, with multi-course menus that highlight both classic Creole flavors and contemporary twists.

Whether you’re indulging in oysters, gumbo, or decadent desserts, a Réveillon Dinner is a delicious way to experience New Orleans’ culinary magic during the holidays. Many participating restaurants offer festive prix-fixe menus throughout December, making it easy to enjoy the city’s finest cuisine. And each year the menus are decadent and delicious, so even if you’ve indulged in Réveillon before, you’ll enjoy a new culinary experience this year.
